Donate to the John Payne Music Center

The Covid Era has brought new challenges to the John Payne Music Center.  In mid-March 2020, when we had to shut down our physical location, we were fortunately able to transfer successfully almost all our private lesson students to an online format.

Our large adult ensemble program, nearly 90 students in 17 different small bands, was not so fortunate. This program could not be continued online and so the Center suddenly lost $12,000 of  monthly revenue and the ensemble teachers lost their jobs and their paychecks while the Center was still legally obligated to pay over $5,000 in monthly rent for rooms we could not use.

Back in March we heard that a few ensemble students valued their ensemble programs so much that they were planning to continue paying for their ensemble classes even though they were not meeting! We reached out to all our ensemble students and asked if any of them would be willing and able to do the same.  And over HALF of them were! Quite a few donated even more than the amount of their ensemble fees, to make up for the fact that not all ensemble members were contributing.  The resulting income, including a few quite large one time contributions, has successfully closed most of the financial gap through September.

But the Covid Era is still not over—and is looking less like a sprint and more like a marathon these days.  Current donations from ensemble students, though still substantial (thank you so much, generous ensemble students!),  are now covering only about half to two thirds of our income shortfall. So it is time for us to broaden our support. We have been serving the greater Brookline area with lessons and ensembles, spreading the joy of music making, for forty-one years—-since Jimmy Carter was president! With your help we can continue to do so through the Covid Era and beyond.
